Blah Blah Capitalism Blah Blah Personal Style

vintage top/slip/jewelry, Oasap leggings, doc martens boots, urban outfitters backpack, ebay faux foxtail

While reading Style Bubble the other day (as I do, religiously), I was completely struck by this outfit post. Suddenly, it all became clear to me! I knew I was tired of the pastel thing, and even of the neon thing. I never know how to wear multiple colors, and always gravitate towards black, dark green, dark red, etc. However, I knew I had to try when I saw Susie looking perfectly modern, and absolutely fearless in her dip-dye slipdress and Nike sneakers. I realize that this outfit is not a literal interpretation of the rainbow of colors Susie is wearing, but rather my attempt to try something out of my comfort zone.

I received these badass leggings from my newest sponsor, Oasap, and wanted to incorporate them into the outfit. I'm coming into the tie-dye thing a little late, but I like that not so many people are wearing it these days.
In fact, that brings me to something that I've been thinking about lately in terms of fashion. It's kind of frightening to me how I and so many of my peers think of fashion in an expendable way. What I mean to say is, I'll be obsessed with some item or trend (velvet loafers, cropped sweaters, waterfall hem dresses, etc.) for a week to a month, and then I'll wake up and "discover" that it's oh-so-passe now. And if I've gotten something that represents the trend, I'll feel like I can't wear it anymore. I hate this tendency, because it promotes thoughtless spending and adherence to a certain social construct. I got the tie-dye leggings- ostensibly a "trendy" item- because they were free, and therefore it wasn't a purchase I had to rationalize.

That's where "les grandes blogs" differ from those of lower tiers (in which I include myself)- they establish their popularity through a style that is either innovative/progressive or clearly their own. These include (in my humble opinion):
Jean Griege
Hanneli
Luxirare
Karla's Closet
Style Rookie
Style Bubble
Christeric
Sea of Shoes
5 Inch and Up
(there are others of course, but I wanted to make the list concise and these were the ladies that came to mind)
I've been struggling lately to define what is "my" style (which clearly means that I should be thinking of more important things). I think this stems from my thoughts about what I want to pursue as my future career, and the desire to be fearless in the things I undertake. I like these women because they do not ask if you like what they are wearing, or ask for suggestions as to how they should dress. They state their sartorial opinions clearly and vibrantly. This is in part, of course, because they have access to more expendable funds/blog partnerships with which to furnish their wardrobes, and I (to put it mildly) do not. I am sure that my personal style will change greatly over the next ten years, but I am trying slowly to assimilate that which I feel complements me, and makes me excited about getting dressed in the morning. I think I've been more inspired (and intimidated!) lately because of the warmer weather. What I have discovered is that I always return to either things I have been collecting for a long time (feminine vintage dresses, Doc Martens boots), or items that have nostalgia for me (my mother's clothes from when she was in college). I think this might be a good starting point.
**Disclaimer**
I am not saying that these bloggers are the only ones who inspire me. I read upwards of 50 fashion blogs and 200 fashion tumblrs that constantly supply me with inspiration. I only mention a few by name because they are the ones who have informed me the most sartorially as of late.

lazy spring swells

American Apparel t-shirt, Silence & Noise jeans, Doc Martens lace-ups, Michael Kors bag

My dad snapped these pictures of me after we ate at Le Petit Cafe on Spring Street yesterday. A tuna avocado sandwich and an iced tea were absolutely perfect on this lovely day, I'm so pleased with how nice the weather has been in New York this week! I can't wait to travel to New Orleans in two weeks, where it will undoubtedly be about 90 degrees all the time and perhaps my ghostly white legs will even see the sun! No promises, though...I don't know if the world is ready for that.

Also, I've been recently obsessed with the online vintage store Redrock lately. It's a really excellent label that's sold on ASOS Marketplace (of course- everything good in the world comes from ASOS), and I'm digging the vibe of this photoshoot. It has such a great Pasty & Adina vibe, no? They're affordable too, which is always a plus in my book. Check 'em out on Facebook!

they'll forget your name soon

forever21 blouse, vintage earrings

In terms of makeup, my regime is pretty relaxed- I've been focusing on my skin (which is far from perfect) and my eyes (which are small). The rest I kind of just leave alone, although I go through small obsessions with lipstick colors from time to time. Right now, the products that I use are:

Laura Mercier SPF20 tinted oil-free moisturizer- My biggest makeup splurge, but it couldn't be more worth it. I don't use powder or foundation or anything, and each tube lasts me about 5 months.
Anastasia brow kit- Although I have very dark hair, I like using the lighter brown to fill in my eyebrows, because it looks less "done". Then I use their shimmery, iridescent eyeshadow on my tear ducts to add a little highlight.
Maybelline Great Lash- Standard, ultra black, and the only mascara I've ever loved.
NYC liquid eyeliner- I get it at CVS for like $1.99, but it works so well! I'm still a cat-eye fanatic, I feel like it adds some femininity to my look, which can be a little hard because of the undercut.
Topshop Polish in "iced coffee"- I just rub a little onto the apples of my cheeks, and I'm good to go!

Also, I don't post about music that much anymore, but I'd like to recommend these 5 artists that I think are genuinely cool and good and interesting.
Chelsea Wolfe- I've been talking about her forever but it seems that just now people are realizing her infinite genius...silly.

Stop listening to Lana Del Rey.

Breakfast with Phillip (Glass)

c/o sugarlips dress, vintage belt, urban outfitters bralet, michael kors watch

I don't have any classes on Fridays, so I like sleeping in and taking the time to make a breakfast that I'm actually excited to eat, instead of running around, gulping black coffee and shoving handfuls of Kashi in my mouth. Lately, poached eggs have been my favorite thing, I'm eating one here on multigrain toast with spicy hummus. Kind of a weird combo, but I like the combination of textures and flavors.

To the outfit. I was recently sent this beautiful dress by Sugarlips apparel, and I think it's even more beautiful in person. I wanted to get out of my only black day dresses rut (I think I have about 10 now), and the combination of the twirly skirt and cutout back and shoulders was too much to pass up. I put a neon green bralet underneath, and burgundy tights for a little added interest. I hope you all have amazing weekends! xx

(Did the deer tapestry fool you into thinking I was outside taking these pictures? GOTCHA!)
